Zyrtec Use

Zyrtec is a prescription medication that treats indoor and outdoor allergies.

How Zyrtec works

When you come in contact with something that you are allergic to, your body produces a chemical called histamine. Histamine causes unpleasant allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose. Zyrtec helps relieve allergy symptoms by blocking the action of histamine in your body.

How to take Zyrtec

Zyrtec can be taken with or without food. The recommended daily dose of Zyrtec is one 5 mg tablet or 10 mg tablet a day.

Zyrtec precautions

Zyrtec may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some patients. Therefore, use caution when driving or operating heavy machinery. While taking Zyrtec you should limit your alcohol consumption. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness. If you take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) to treat depression you must wait at least14 days after quitting before you can begin treatment with Zyrtec.

What to tell your doctor

Before you begin your treatment with Zyrtec, be sure to tell your doctor about any prescription or nonprescription medications you are taking. If you are pregnant or nursing DO NOT take this medication without first consulting with your doctor. To avoid complications with Zyrtec, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, difficulty urinating or an enlarged prostate.

Zyrtec side effects

In clinical trials Zyrtec side effects were mild to moderate and included dry mouth, drowsiness, and sore throat.
